Terence Herbert (Longlands
1946-50) has kindly sent us the following information and photographs on
The Mere
Brook Street School was the school that many children from the children’s
home in Norton Road STOURBRIDGE called “The Mere”. It was
built in 1909 and I was there from 1935 –1950. I would think that many girls and boys
would be on the old photographs that you have, as yet I haven’t seen any for the years
that I went to Brook St. 1946 –1950. MY brother John Herbert also went to Brook Street School, he is twelve months younger than me.
I have some pictures from sports day at the "MERE", during the early 50,s most of the children would have
gone to Brook Street school.
The Mere Houses foundation stone was laid on 1st July 1904 and was
open in 1909 by the Stourbridge Union. I also believe that the home had a school on site
which because of the influx of children to the home Brook Street School was built to
accommodate the children. Interesting thought?
