School Uniform, 1955-91
The boys' uniform consisted of a white or
grey shirt, dark grey trousers, charcoal grey or black blazer and black shoes. The
original Longlands uniform included a red tie. This was replaced with a striped tie in
the mid 1970s. The standard tie and prefect's tie differed in the colour of the central
stripe, as shown in the photos to the right.
The girls' wore a white or light blue
blouse, dark blue or grey skirt, navy blue cardigan or jumper, black shoes and the same
tie as the boys. In the summer the younger girls wore a light blue patterned dress.
Many pupils didn't stick rigidly to the
dress code. In the 1970s for example, orange shirts, huge tie knots, and tartan
accessories were fairly common sights.
